Just Right

“It’s not too hot, not too cold, but just right.” ~ From Goldilocks and the Three Bears

In the fairy tale of Goldilocks, the three bears, bowls, chairs, and beds are all metaphors for the two ends and the middle of every spectrum. Perfection on one end, chaos on the other. Balance is in the middle. What Goldilocks calls just right.

In today’s world we seem to have forgotten about just right. We don’t strive towards the middle because we’ve lost our connection to one pole. To the natural world and spiritual beliefs that are rooted in wisdom. The pursuit of knowledge has reigned supreme and we’re out of balance. Climate change, inflation, mass-shootings.  Not “just right.”

The story of Adam and Eve seems to denounce the pursuit of knowledge. Afterall, when we ate the fruit from the tree, we fell from grace. We ignored God’s wisdom, seduced by temptation. It doesn’t mean knowledge is bad. Human beings are meant to be thinkers, capable of imagining and creating. It isn’t about one or the other, but discernment. When you disregard wisdom in the quest for knowledge, you fall from grace.

I believe we restore grace as we learn how to balance listening to the wisdom of Spirit with our pursuit of knowledge. It requires mindfulness, stillness, and awareness.

When we ignore wisdom in the pursuit of knowledge, we orchestrate our own downfall while blaming God— or the nonexistence of one. Structures and empires built on knowledge alone will crumble. They always have—since the beginning of time. A flood, ice age or a re-set of some kind will come. But don’t despair. It isn’t in our hands. Everything really is just right.
